The clinical provider for Amazon Care, the tech giant’s virtual-first medical platform, is quietly gearing up to do business in 17 additional states, according to public documents viewed by STAT.

Since 2018, Amazon has contracted with a Washington-based medical practice called Care Medical to offer staff in Washington state a combination of virtual and in-person visits through Amazon Care. In February alone, Care Medical filed paperwork to start doing business in Georgia, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, and Alaska, among other states. STAT is the first to report on the filings.

Care Medical appears to contract exclusively with Amazon to provide staff for its virtual and in-person medical services. While it has no website and lists only a P.O. box as its address, the company employs at least three dozen health care providers — mostly registered nurses and family physicians — all in the Seattle, Washington vicinity. In an email to STAT, an Amazon spokesperson said Care Medical is a private medical practice consisting of licensed providers “with whom Amazon has contracted as Amazon Care’s clinical team.”
